A U.S. Island Resort Destination Review

I’ve had an increased amount of U.S. travel requests this year and thought it would be a great opportunity for me to investigate for my clients. Since my business is primarily groups, destination weddings, honeymoon, family and couples travel, I decided to start with Florida.  This past week I went down to Captiva Island in Southwest Florida. The last time I ventured this way was in 2011 for my Babymoon so I was excited to return!

I remembered how amazing their Tourist Board was from our original visit, so I was sure to reach out ahead of time to connect on what are the must-do’s to report back on for my clients. In addition to the advice and experience I provide, you as travelers can also take advantage of the Sanibel and Captiva Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.  They have kiosks all over the airport.  It is here where you can pick up free information, plan excursions and decided what you do/don’t want to do during your vacation.  They are a great resource!  If you don’t catch them in the airport though, their building in Sanibel is worth the trip!  It’s one of my favorite buildings on the island.

Our stay was at the resort property on the islands, South Seas Island Resort.  In my opinion, they provide the best resort experience in Southwest Florida. They embrace the idea of “island time” (you can’t drive over 19 MPH anywhere!) and wanting to ensure guests relax and enjoy their vacation.  Ringing throughout the resort was such phrases as “it is really as if we are in the Caribbean!”

Evening view from our balcony in the Harbourside Guest Rooms

Our room was the Harbourview Room what was spacious and had a stunning view.  We had gorgeous views from the front of our room of the sunset and amazing views of the sunrise, sailboats and manatees from our balcony. This resort is not an all-inclusive, as there are none in this area of the USA (and as you know, barely any in the USA to begin with).  A rental car is strongly suggested and parking was included in the price of their resort fee, which was fair for the amenities provided. There was never a struggle to find parking coming on/off property.

There are three main pools offered to guests that are large and distinct. There is a pool with slides, a family pool and an adults-only pool area. The beach was also spacious and beautiful. Chairs, towels and umbrellas are included in your resort fee as well. Their staff will arrange as many as you need for your travel party so all you have to do is park yourselves and relax. There is also a grill and bar on the beach as well as waitress service right to your beach chair.

There were a lot of activities on the island, both on and off of the resort, to experience.  At your fingertips on property was a golf putting green, corn hole, shelling, swimming and so much more. There is a large amount of complimentary activities listed in their daily events sheet. On property, for very fair pricing, they also offered fishing, kayak, paddle board, banana boat, waverunners, fishing boats and parasailing. The options are plenty!

Fishing Pier which would also make a beautiful wedding/vow renewal location!

Off property options are where you’ll want to reference me and the tourist board brochures. We wanted to experience shelling off property and spent two afternoons at the popular beach in Sanibel to do so. Lots of beautiful shells and smiles were found here! Not to forget and mention that we swam WITH A DOLPHIN in the GULF while shelling!!!  There was also an extensive amount of dining experiences both on and off property, which I will address in a separate blog for my fellow food-loving AND fellow allergy-aware travelers.

So, you want to know who this destination is for, right?  I can’t think of someone this destination and resort are NOT for!  First and foremost, the wedding amenities on this property are dream-like. I have many brides who want to wed in an island setting without going out of the country.  This island and this particular resort, as well as my strong partnership with them, should be a great fit for your upcoming destination wedding or vow renewal.  Honeymooners and Babymooners (like I was!) looking for an island vacation within the USA should also be asking me about the resorts in Captiva and Sanibel.  Families and couples, sailors and shellers-alike, all will benefit from this resort stay.  The golf amenities were STUNNING too!

I look forward to booking you on your next Captiva and Sanibel Island vacation!
